For Brilliant Students

Once there lived a poor farmer in a certain village. He spent the whole of his life working in the field. He was too old and too weak to work in the fields then. He had three sons who were all very healthy and smart yet indecent and ill-natured, quarrelsome, and short-tempered.

The farmer remained worried about them all the time. He always advised them to remain united but they paid a deaf ear to his words. At last, he fell seriously ill. He realized that his end was not far. One day, he decided to reach them with the blessings of unity.

He called his sons to deathbed and requested them to bring a bundle of sticks. When the bundle was brought, he challenged them if any one of them had the power to break the bundle. The sons accepted the challenge. First of all, the youngest brother tried to break the bundle but in vain. Then, came forward to the elder brother. He also applied all his energy but could not break it. The eldest son came forward with great zeal. But he too, could not break the bundle because the sticks were united and strong.

The farmer untied the bundle and asked them to break the sticks one by one separately. Now it was quite easy for them to break the sticks because the sticks had grown weak after being disunited. The youngest brother broke all the sticks in no time. It was time for the old man to advise his sons. He told his sons that the sticks were strong when they were tied together. They were weak when they were separated and disunited. In the same way, you would be strong and powerful if you were united. On the other hand, anyone could hurt them easily, if they got separated and disunited. The advice bore fruit. The sons never quarrelled after that.

Moral
1. Union is a strength
2. United you stand, divided you fall.
